Adventures in Knitting

Keeping with my resolutions I decided to try my hand at knitting.  My Grandmother taught me years ago but  I lost those skills and picked up crochet as an adult and I have been at it ever since (crochet that is).  I can knit the ruffle scarves but I know some don’t actually consider that “knitting.”  The knit stitch was easy enough for me but I just couldn’t get the purl stitch right no matter what! In addition to having some knit books at my disposal, nothing worked for me.  In an act of desperation and frustration I went on YouTube to find a good tutorial and I came across VeryPink Knits. Staci is an awesome teacher and the videos are clear and concise, look her up if you are looking for some online videos.

After mastering the purl stitch I decided to jump WAY ahead of the game and do cables.  Cables look hard but they really are not.  The only problem I had was that blasted hole right at the crossover of my cable.  I read in one of my books that it was from the yarn being too tight.  Which was a problem for me…the stitches were too tight.  It is suggested that you work the cable stitches a little bit looser on the row before you cross the cable.  This enables you to cross the cables and then spread the stitches out as you work.  I haven’t tried that part yet.  It’s best for this crafty dame to find a nice beginner project and concentrate on my stitches having even tension LOL!!

I will leave you with some pictures.  There is one cable in worsted weight yarn and the other in super bulky yarn.  What are some good starter projects/patterns out there?  What was your first project that you knitted and do you still have it?  It does get a bit overwhelming in the beginning!

First cable ever!!
